The Seven Wonders of the Modern World - Second Entry.
The Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
Sixth Position – Chichen Itza.
The Chichen
Itza was a vast pre-Columbian city built by Maya people of the Terminal
Classic period, located in Tinúm Municipality, Yucatán State, Mexico. I
sincerely think that this wonder is completely awesome. The structures placed
in this site have such interesting shapes and designs, considering the year it
was founded, this site for me is incredibly wonderful and fascinating.
Furthermore, there still are secrets that surround this site and its
edifications, which calls me the attention even more.
About the Wonder:
The Chichen
Itza is the second most popular site for visitors to Mexico and it is
considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the New World. The Castillo is probably the most famous
image of Chichen Itza. Castillo
means “castle” in Spanish. The Castillo
is a monument in the shape of a pyramid. There are four staircases on the
outside of the pyramid.

History:
The Chichen
Itza was founded around the year 300 AD; it was a Maya city, which was
later significantly influenced by the Toltec civilization. Having its peak
between c. 750 and 1200 AD. The name Chichen Itza probably derives from a
large sinkhole known as the Sacred Cenote or 'mouth of the well of the Itza'
into which the Maya threw offerings of jade and gold, and as the presence of
bones testifies, human sacrifices. Although the early history of the site is
still not clear, settlement was certain by the Classic period (c. 250-900 AD).
After the collapse of Teotihuacan, migrants may have come to the site from
varying parts of Mesoamerica, and it seems likely there was contact with the
Itza, a Maya group. Thanks to the Spanish conquests, the Chichen Itza fell into a
rapid decline from 1200 CE, and Mayapán became the new capital. However, the Chichen
Itza never disappeared and it left us an opportunity to imagine how the
life of the people belonging to this utterly important and influential culture
was.
Importance and significance:
The
enormous concentration of ancient edifications with an incredible cultural and
historical value, as well as the legacy of one of the most important cultures
of America and the world, makes this site so important and invaluable. The
secrets that this site hide about the life of this ancient civilization and the
opportunity it gives to the modern-day people to know about their past,
costumes and everyday life is more than enough to make it truly worth
preserving.
Furthermore,
the fact that this culture developed such interesting costumes, perfect
architectures, religion and the way their culture rose and advanced in political
organization, when talking about hierarchy, calls the attention of many people
who want to know how they achieved something that difficult and in what
circumstances they achieved it.
